For decades, the Clinical Meetings, Master Care Series, and WIROCs shaped the academic heartbeat of the Bombay Orthopaedic Society. Yet, as the Society matured, many felt that BOS should also honour another tradition; supporting meaningful research that could touch lives beyond the conference hall.
Around this time, an old foe resurfaced in a troubling new form. Surgeons across Mumbai began seeing patients with osteoarticular tuberculosis who were not improving despite proper treatment. The whispers grew into concern: Was drug-resistant TB becoming our new challenge?
The BOS think tank decided it could not remain a bystander.
Under the stewardship of Dr. Vikas Agashe, and with a generous contribution from a senior philanthropic surgeon, BOS launched its landmark project:
“A Study of Non-Respondents to ATT in Osteoarticular Tuberculosis.”
With support from the Research Society of Hinduja Hospital and open participation from all BOS members, the study became a true Pan-Mumbai effort, reflecting the unity and quiet determination that have long defined the Society.
Over the years, 89 patients were evaluated. One-third showed drug resistance, some with MDR and XDR patterns. Sixteen were TB mimics. The findings confirmed what many had feared as resistance had worsened compared with earlier BOS data. Yet, every patient received the treatment they needed.
The study earned the Golden Jubilee Oration at IOACON 2019 and publication in the Indian Journal of Orthopaedics; a proud moment for a project born from collective concern and a shared sense of responsibility.
It remains a touching chapter in BOS history; a reminder that beyond meetings and milestones, the Society has always been at its best when its heart and its science move together.
As the Golden Jubilee approached, BOS hoped to bring IOACON back to Mumbai. A heartfelt, meticulous bid was placed in Agra in 2013; but the honour went to Jaipur. The moment stung, but it also sparked something powerful. Instead of retreating, BOS chose to rise. Thus, was born WIROC Grande 2015, a celebration shaped by emotion, memory, and quiet resolve - a tribute worthy of fifty years of learning, leadership, and loyalty.
Held over three days at the JW Marriott, Sahar, the meeting reaffirmed a proud belief: Indian orthopaedic faculty were fully capable of delivering world-class academics on their own strength. Modern touches including a live conference app, an expansive ARS system, and a well-designed trade arena blended seamlessly with the Society’s traditional warmth and discipline.
Academically, the meeting honoured every corner of orthopaedics. Senior faculty led 8 am sessions, and packed halls at sunrise reflected the BOS ethos, committed, respectful, and united in purpose. Timekeeping became sacred for the first time, setting a new cultural benchmark.
The heritage moments were unforgettable.
All living Past Presidents on one stage…
The release of Legends & Legacies…
And the iconic “Photograph of the Century” - a powerful portrait of fifty years of service and stewardship.
Innovative sessions: The Master’s Cut, Mind Over Matter, Prudence & Jurisprudence, and Rise & Shine, brought freshness while honouring tradition.
A reflective Presidential Guest Lecture added a quiet spiritual depth, anchoring the meeting’s emotional core.
Behind the scenes was a beautiful triad of young volunteers, experienced organisers, and wise senior mentors working in harmony and giving WIROC Grande its soul.
In the end, WIROC Grande 2015 became more than a conference.
It became a symbol of resilience, pride, unity, and the timeless spirit of BOS.
A Golden Jubilee not just celebrated but felt and remembered as one of the Society’s most treasured milestones.
