Dr. Mohan Madhav Desai , a man whose smiling and calm behaviour
encompasses a pleothra of ideas and thought. An
Undergraduate of Grant Medical College & Sir JJ Group of Hospitals,
Mumbai and Postgraduate from LTMMC & Sion
Hospital, Mumbai , he has been bathed in the academic milieu of
Mumbai . He is currently the HOD , Department of
Orthopaedics , Seth GS Medical College & KEM Hospital, Parel.
Dr. Desai born in 1964 , a year prior to the year Bombay Orthopaedic
Society was formed. He fondly says that he grew
with BOS academically and almost considers it his contemporary. He
became a BOS member in 1992 and used to attend
many clinical meetings & courses of BOS since his PG days. It helped
him immensely as in that era there were no
internet, e-resources and limited access to literature. The
collective wisdom of the legends and eminent orthopaedic
surgeons were all that was available.
He was introduced in the BOS community as a member by his then boss
Dr. Sushil Sabnis. He had an opportunity to read
a paper in WIROC 1992 which was his original work on ulnar claw
hand.
Later he got an opportunity to do the Merck BOS fellowship for 3
weeks to Chennai, Madurai & CMC Vellore where he
spent one week each at these places. It was a general orthopedic
exposure but it gave him an opportunity to learn
and socialize, thus fostering his belief in the local
fellowships.
He became BOS EC member with Prof Dr. Naushad in 2007. They worked
with Dr Karkhanis, Dr Antao & Dr. Jhunjhunwala as
presidents in those 3 years . They conducted WIROC 2010 as
Organising Secretaries in Grand Hyatt in
He also did basic arthroplasty courses earlier which included
cadaveric courses for the first time in BOS, the
bodies were fresh frozen which gave a simulated feel of operating on
live persons ; with Dr P.B. Bhosale as the
convener & Dr. Desai as the co-convener . Inspite of being a 6 day
course, this course was an all time hit. There
was always ever growing demand & calls for getting registered for
this course. The convenors had to disappoint
people on several occasions due to logistical reasons of cadaveric
hands on. Yet often enrolling 2-3 last minute
additions on special demands.
Dr. Desai started a new course in BOS which was the Pelviacetabular
course for the first time in 2011 and he was the
convener for the same.
In 2016, he got an opportunity to be Vice President . This was the
50th year of Wiroc. He remembers of an instance
when there were 21 live surgeries , streaming in , in various fields
like arthroplasty, trauma & spine ,all being
performed in KEM hospital from 7 blocks of operation
theater.
Dr. Mohan Desai became President Elect of BOS in 2023 and conducted
Wiroc 2024 at J W Marriott , Mumbai
It was his idea of starting a sponsored BOS arthroplasty fellowship
for 6 weeks. As a pilot project, it was started
in KEM hospital in 2024. They have had 2 fellows in 2 years so far.
It was incidental that KEM hospital acquired a
fully automatic robot through CSR activity of BK Tyres industry &
with support of Dr. Vaibhav Bagaria , a KEM Alumni
. Both the fellows of arthroplasty got to watch robotic knee
surgeries & could get hands on the cadaver to practice
robotic surgeries.
According to Dr.Desai BOS is a big family & there are continuous
exchanges of thoughts and knowledge amongst the
members. Now , BOS has grown in its membership & with members spread
all over the country & abroad, the future looks
bright and promising.
