In more ways than one, Dr. Chandrashekhar J.
Thakkar could be considered as the ‘renaissance
man’ for the Bombay Orthopaedic Society.
As a junior BOS Executive Council member during the
Silver Jubilee WIROC, Dr. Thakkar suggested,
implemented and executed the herculean task of
recording and editing video cassettes of seven
different surgeries performed by the then stalwarts
of Mumbai orthopaedics which were distributed to
delegates of the conference.
As the Hon. BOS Secretary, he computerised the
records of the BOS, conducted weekend meetings
with sub-specialities related to orthopaedics like
radiology and rheumatology, introduced the concept
of bone model workshops conducted and conducted
multiple external fixator and pelviacetabular courses.
He also introduced new concepts in WIROCs over the
years like making PowerPoint presentations,
computerised analysis of bone deformities, the
concept of 3D models for complex THR’s , bilateral
knee replacement using navigation and the concept
of evidence-based orthopaedics. His Katrak Oration
titled ‘tiny little screws and flimsy little plates take
broken hip far far away.
As the BOS President in 2017, he introduced the
theme of “perfection through protocols” and
prepared a book on the various checklists which is
considered a very important document in
evidence-based orthopaedics today. He took his
WIROC to a global platform and relayed it live
various corners of the world for the first time in BOS
history.
