Dr. Aseem Parekh
The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.
~ Jack London

ANP, aka PRIMUS, is an orthopaedic surgeon, teacher of orthopaedics and a life coach. The common thread that runs through these vocations is service. In the fullness of time, they became his avocations. The transformation, he shares, was miraculous, in that he has not experienced his life as drudgery, or even work, but as a journey from one moment of realised bliss to the next... and for him, it goes on. He secured the best available training in Bombay, graduate and postgraduate, at the Seth G. S. Medical College and K. E. M. Hospital.

An early appointment to a staff position at his alma mater set the tone for his professional life. He avers that we are privileged, in the course of our work, to see human beings as they are, stripped bare of the complex and complicated layers of artifice they wear and that we alone see what is inherently good and evil in human beings. That is the reward of our profession, to know and serve our fellow beings and this reward is in the mind. He moved to score an away goal to TNMC and B. Y. L. Nair Hospital and served there as HOD for 25 years.

It provided him with a platform to reach undergraduate and postgraduate students, occupational and physiotherapy students and nursing students, teaching them medicine, surgery, orthopaedics... and life. He is a much sought after teacher in the clinic, especially for postgraduate teaching. His conduct of ward rounds has passed into folklore. At the K. E. M., there is an eponymous "dressing trolley round" named for him. He abhors didactic classroom teaching. The one exception he makes is for the occupational and physiotherapy students. He lectures on gait, walking aids and exercise physiology for them. It's now a tradition.

He is a popular staff member with his peers and students alike. He loves "being the moment" at social events and participates with a nearly unmatched gusto, no holds barred.

He served as a member of the Executive Council of the BOS in the late 1990s, during which time the arthroplasty course was conceptualised, he has the honour of being the index convenor, the privilege bestowed on him many times before he finally bowed out some years ago. During his stewardship, NAIR was always involved in BOS activities. In one particular year the clinical meeting, the arthroplasty course, the arthroscopy course and the AGM were all held at NAIR. A few fellowships at centres of excellence abroad followed, as did private practice, which he finds an enjoyable and profitable enterprise.

He served on the BOS Executive Council again for four more years, one as Vice President and three more, pre, post and Presidential. He has served, by invitation, on the Presidential Advisory Committee and the Presidential Disciplinary Committee of the BOS. WIROC, it's the baby of the Organising Secretaries, yet the paterfamilias is the President. ANP is proud of the result in 2016. He is, at the time of this writing, Professor Emeritus of Orthopaedic Surgery at TNMC, the first such appointment for an orthopaedic surgeon in any medical college in Mumbai, where he continues to practise Primum Non-Nocere, and mentoring the best and the brightest medical minds, happy with his lot. His professional progeny are scattered all over India, the USA, the UK and the Middle East. They have done him proud. They are his LEGACY!
