A leader who metamorphosed the Bombay
Orthopaedic Society from a purely academic
association to a scientific research body, Dr. Vikas
Agashe continues to toil in clinical research along with
a buzzing orthopaedic practice at the P. D. Hindjua
Hospital and Research Centre in Mumbai.
Academically oriented industrious and hard-working
since his orthopaedic training days, Dr. Agashe
embarked on his scientific journey when he pursued
the B. O. S Travelling Fellowship, which took him to
multiple centers in Southern India. The researcher in
him bore fruit when he, along with Dr. A. J. Thakur, did
an analysis of implants manufactured in India. This
path-breaking work led them to present their analysis
at the WIROC of 1991, in a symposium called "Quality
of Indian Implants" This symposium proved to be the
turning point in Indian implant manufacturing and led
to a significant improvement in the quality of Indian
implants.
He also circulated a survey to the members of the B.
O. S. on Osteoarticular Tuberculosis in 2004. This led
to two research projects on culture sensitivity in
tuberculosis and non-responding patients, which
was funded partly by the P. D. Hinduja Hospital and
partly by the B. O. S. His research redefined the
dynamics of our understanding of the management
strategies for Osteoarticular Tuberculosis.
Never to have contested in an election for an
academic association, Dr. Agashe was elected to the
office of the President of the B. O. S. by common
consensus purely on the basis of his hard work,
dedication, sincerity and merit. "Documentation &
Research on Indian Soil” was the theme of the
Bombay Orthopaedic Society during his tenure.
His motto of "Publish & Flourish" continues to inspire
many young researchers, as does his enthusiasm
and unending quest for excellence.
