An all-round athlete, a college champion and
Captain of the Bombay Unit Football Team,
Dr. Nicholas Antao transmitted his passion for Sports
into a full-time profession by choosing to be an
Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in Sports Medicine.
A product of the old school of thought, Dr. Antao's
training and thinking was very much influenced by the
likes of Dr. L. N. Vora, Dr. A. V. Bavdekar,
Dr. M. N. Shahane, Dr. R. M. Bhansali, Dr. C. G.
Pradhan, Dr. S. K. Bhandare and Dr. R. S. Dhir while
working at the K. E. M. Hospital Department of
Orthopaedics.
He has served the Bombay Orthopaedic Society as
an Honorary Secretary for two terms, Vice President
for two terms, before eventually becoming the
President of the Bombay Orthopaedic Society.
Always helpful and encouraging to young surgeons,
Dr. Antao was instrumental in regularizing the
working pattern of the B. O. S. He was the first to
initiate printed Annual Reports of the B. O. S., a
newsletter called as Orthofront, which published
cases discussed in the B. O. S. Clinical meetings, the
B. O. S. Master Series and Forums on medico-legal
dilemmas and medical ethics.
He is also credited with starting the B. O. S. Best
Ethics Essay Award and the B. O. S. - J. B. J. S.
Workshop on writing and publishing scientific papers
during his Presidential tenure.
Dr. Antao runs a flourishing orthopaedic practice in
Bandra and Andheri and is attached as a Senior
Consultant to the Holy Family Hospital.
