There are indeed very few surgeons who gain
worldwide repute and peer recognition at the same
time. Dr. S. D. Mehta definitely belonged to that rare
cadre of men. A thorough gentleman, an
exceptionally gifted surgeon and equally dedicated
academician, he was liked and respected by
everyone.
His scientific manuscript published in 'Clinical
Orthopaedics' on the management of old unreduced
Monteggia Fractures is considered a landmark article
for the management of this condition. The 'S. D.
Mehta's Oblique Osteotomy for the Ulna, as
described in the manuscript, is still considered as the
'Gold Standard' on the basis of which many
subsequent authors have designed their
modifications.
He conducted a flourishing private practice in Ghatkopar and was the Chief of Orthopaedics at the Rajawadi Municipal Hospital, where he trained many residents who went on to become famous consultants in their respective sub-specialities. His legacy continues through his son, Dr. Dharit, who is a practising Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Ghatkopar.
