Late Dr. M. N. Shahane
“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give”
~ Sir Winston Churchill

As one of the most respected senior members of the Bombay Orthopaedic Society, Dr. M. N. Shahane continued to inspire generations of Orthopaedic surgeons.

His own mentor, Dr. A. K. Talwalkar was the one who inspired him to initially take up Orthopaedics and later join the K. E. M. Hospital as an Honorary Orthopaedic Surgeon. Dr. Shahane continued to serve the K. E. M. Hospital for almost a period of 40 years. During this time, he worked with Dr. L. N. Vora and also developed a close friendship with Dr. C. G. Pradhan.

He was always eager to learn new methods and techniques of surgery, Dr. Shahane performed the first Total Hip Arthroplasty at K. E. M. Hospital. Among his favourite surgeries were Closed Tibia Nailing and Triple Arthrodesis of the foot which he learned from Dr. Mullaferoze during his stint at the Children's Orthopaedic Hospital.

Extremely methodical and academically-oriented, he was a part of the first Executive Committee of the Bombay Orthopaedic Society. He later went on to become the Honorary Secretary of the Society. During his Presidential term in 1993-1994, WIROC was held at the Centaur Hotel in Juhu, with Dr. Shyam Mukhi being the WIROC Secretary. During the conference, a token 'Mumbai Bandh' was organized by a regional political party which disrupted the first day of the conference. During his Presidential Address at the conference, Dr. Shahane minced no words and came down heavily against such disruptions.

Dr. Shahane started his private practice at Shivaji Park and later ran a very successful orthopaedic practice at his Nursing Home in Tardeo. He was also associated with the Balabhai Nanavati Hospital in Vile Parle. His orthopaedic legacy is being carried forward by his son, Dr. Sunil Shahane who served as the President of the Bombay Orthopaedic Society in 2019-20.
