Though he had no formal qualification in Orthopaedics, Dr. S. J. Kumbhani had a keen interest in the subject. He had worked with Dr. Herbert Seddon at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (R. N. O. H.), based in Brockley Hill, Stanmore and London before coming to India.

After returning to his motherland, he joined the (B. J. W.) Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children to work under Dr. R. J. Katrak. He later joined St. George's Hospital and continued to work there till his retirement.
