Late Dr. R. J. Katrak
"By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest".
~ Confucius

Born in 1899, Dr. Rustom Jamshedji Katrak completed his M. Ch. from England in the year 1936, and joined the Sir J. J. Hospital in 1940. He moved to the B. J. Wadia Children's Hospital in 1942, then the K. E. M. Hospital in 1944, and finally to the Sion Hospital in 1957. Hence, he is probably the only B. O. S. President to have served as a faculty to all of the four teaching institutes in Mumbai.

As the Founder President of the Bombay Orthopaedic Society, Dr. Katrak was known as a conservative Paediatric Surgeon who had perfected the art of CTEV manipulation and percutaneous tenotomies.

A teacher to Dr. A. K. Talwalkar, Dr. K. T. Dholakia, and Dr. L. N. Vora, who was his last registrar before he retired, Dr. Katrak formed the Bombay Orthopaedic Club in the year 1965-66.

He was the first Indian to be elected as a Fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association. The 'R. J. Katrak Oration', which is the highest honour bestowed annually on an invited Orthopaedic speaker of repute at WIROC, is a tribute to this legend.
