The Living
The last decade transformed orthopaedics. Technology surged, subspecialties flourished, and many general meetings across India slowly faded. But the Bombay Orthopaedic Society remained anchored to its timeless belief: orthopaedics is strongest when we stand together.
WIROC continued to unite every subspecialty and every generation under one roof, carrying forward six decades of fellowship and heritage. Then came 2020; a year that changed everything. The world shut down. Hospitals overflowed. Lives were reshaped overnight. For the first time, BOS faced a challenge that was not academic but profoundly human.
In those uncertain months, the Society returned to its oldest virtues, compassion, unity, and quiet courage.
Under Prof. Shubhranshu Mohanty, with Dr. Swapnil M. Keny as Honorary Secretary, BOS launched humanitarian initiatives to support young residents on COVID duty. The COWIN campaign became a symbol of solidarity; members standing by one another when it mattered most. Academics too found a new path.
BOS became the first orthopaedic body to create a full Online Academic Calendar, ensuring that Clinical Meetings, Master Care Series, and instructional courses continued without pause. Even through screens, the BOS spirit held strong.
And then came the moment that defined an era. As the first wave eased, Prof. Mohanty voiced a brave, almost fragile hope:
“Let us meet again.”
With equal measures of caution and longing, Dr. Mandar Agashe and Dr. Satish Mutha moved forward, crafting the boldest academic event of the pandemic era - WIROC 2020: Unlocked.
Every safety measure was planned with precision. Yet what people remember most is the emotion; eyes smiling above masks, colleagues reuniting after months of silence, the simple human warmth of being together again.
And then, a moment of extraordinary grace.
Mr. Ratan Tata, dignified and inspiring as ever, travelled personally to inaugurate WIROC Unlocked. He came not for ceremony, but to stand with a community rebuilding itself.
His presence filled the hall with quiet strength; a reminder that courage can be gentle, and leadership profoundly human.
In the years that followed, BOS only grew stronger. WIROC halls filled once more; vibrant, eager, alive. While many general meetings across India struggled, WIROC thrived, driven by: a democratic spirit, a respectful hierarchy, and a tradition where youth lead with the guidance of wisdom of the old guard.
Now, as WIROC 2025 celebrates 60 years of BOS, Dr. Gautam Zaveri and Dr. Ashish Phadnis lead a young, dedicated team ready to carry the torch forward.
Sixty years on, the essence remains unchanged: BOS is not just an academic society. It is a family. A heritage. A community that rises together; especially when tested.
Through every storm, one truth endures: BOS does not just conduct meetings. BOS keeps people connected, courageous, and united in purpose.
This is the spirit that has guided the Bombay Orthopaedic Society for six remarkable decades.
Rooted in tradition, strengthened by unity, and always believing that we grow best when we grow together.
